The Sir Winston Churchill Society
of Vancouver Island

Our Mission

The Sir Winston Churchill Society of Vancouver Island is devoted to the memory of one of the most outstanding leaders of the world in recorded history.  Incorporated under the Society Act of B.C. in 2004, the society is dedicated to ensure that his ideals and achievements are not forgotten by succeeding generations.  It is affiliated with The Churchill Centre, a worldwide non-profit charitable organization.

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill is best known as the British Prime Minister during World War Two, but has also been a soldier, statesman, politician, journalist and Nobel Prize winning author.

Sir Winston visited Victoria in September 1929 when he planted a hawthorne tree on September 6 in Beacon Hill Park at the foot of Quadra. In January of each year, Churchillians gather at the tree to propose a toast to his memory. He loved Canada and Victoria in particular.

Members of the Vancouver Island Society are members of The Churchill Centre and receive its quarterly journal "Finest Hour" which contains articles relating to Churchill’s life, as well as the quarterly “Chartwell Bulletin” featuring exciting activities of The Churchill Centre and its Societies and Affiliates  worldwide. The Churchill Centre also sponsors an annual conference which attracts top Churchill scholars from around the world.
